The Prevention Leaders Virtual Workforce Academy(Workforce Academy) will utilize customized curriculum and processes to strengthen the capacity of prevention leaders across the state of North Carolina.

Training 3: Principles of the Environmental Approach

Training 3 Description: This information-filled half-day course for coalition leaders and members addresses key principles related to content included in the Public Policy and Environmental Change Domain of the Certified Prevention Specialist credentialing process. The course provides foundational information for key concepts underlying environmental prevention and public policy work. Course content will be provided in a way that enables participants to share the information with their coalitions and more effectively participate in the development and implementation of effective environmental- and public policy-based strategies.

Participants will be able to:

• Describe why environmental strategies are important for achieving population-level change
• Understand and apply concepts of population-level change and environmental strategies in community-wide prevention efforts
• Identify evidence-based environmental strategies that will address specific community conditions
• Explain how organizations use the SPF to identify and implement environmental strategies
• Ensure health equity considerations are included in planning and implementing environmental strategies
• Network with prevention providers, community coalitions and community partners in community change efforts

• Overall Training Objectives:

  • Build capacity of NC Prevention Workforce to deliver effective prevention strategies and programs
  • Support those individuals who will be working toward IC& RC Prevention Certification
  • Build knowledge and skills in each of the four training topics:
  • Planning and Evaluation for the Prevention Workforce
  • Principles of Community Organization for the Prevention Workforce
  • Principles of the Environmental Approach for the Prevention Workforce
  • Sustainability and the Prevention Workforce

Presenters for the Academy Include:

Carlton Hall is the President and CEO of Carlton Hall Consulting LLC, a multi-faceted, full-service consulting firm designed to provide customized solutions and enable measurable change for communities, organizations, families and individuals. Carlton spent twelve years with the Community Anti Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) serving in several leadership positions and including most recently, Acting Vice President, Training Operations, and Acting Director for CADCA's National Coalition Institute, responsible for the day to day operational oversight, design, and implementation of its premiere national training delivery system. Carlton also supported CADCA's International Programs in partnership with the US State Department's International Narcotics Law Enforcement division (INL), managing training programs in Kenya, South Africa, and Ghana. Carlton is one of the primary architects of CADCA's National Coalition Academy. The Academy, a year-long coalition development program, is designed to increase the effectiveness of communities in drug demand reduction producing population level outcomes.

Dorothy Chaney is the Founder of Wisconsin Community Health Alliance, an organization committed to supporting coalitions, agencies and individuals to improve the health of their communities and the environments in which they live. Dorothy is committed to equity in community health and works with communities both nationally and internationally to address health disparities and support the development of local solutions to complex problems. For more than 20 years, Dorothy has worked with community-based coalitions to address the impact of substance use on youth and families. Dorothy has also served on many state level work groups and advisory committees in Wisconsin. Chaney also works with communities to implement collective impact approaches to improve community health.

Dave Shavel has extensive experience in the substance abuse prevention field at the community, state and federal levels as a community organizer, coalition director, trainer and technical assistance provider, researcher, and state prevention manager. Dave specializes in technical assistance and training in the areas of strategic planning; needs, resource and readiness assessment; prevention program planning, implementation and evaluation; promoting youth involvement; and, community and state capacity building. Dave currently works throughout the U.S. and internationally to provide training and technical assistance to increase the knowledge, capacity and accountability of community anti-drug coalitions.

Audience: The training was designed for all prevention professionals who are entering the field of prevention or are wanting to upskill their knowledge in the various topic areas.

Skill Level: The training was designed for any skill level.

An application for continuing education credit has been submitted to the NCSAPPB.
